You’re not going to find the same things at a Dunkin Donuts that you will at a Starbucks or The Beanery.

What you have to decide is if you want to be all things to all people or if you want to specialize.

Let’s start with the coffee itself.

Are you going to just have regular coffee but different such as regular, decaf or half and half? Are you going to have flavored coffees? This one option alone opens up a world of possibilities. Are you going to sell coffee beans or grounds so that people can take your coffee home and make their own? If so, will you just have packages that are premade or will you allow customers to mix their own? All these things have to be taken into consideration when planning your product.

What about companion products such as donuts, bagels and things of that nature? Are you going to offer them? If so, what varieties? Dunkin Donuts may be more about the donuts than the coffee, if you ask some people’s opinion. Starbucks has always been about the coffee and yet, they have quite a nice selection of extras, even though they don’t specialize in donuts.

What kind of a crowd are you expecting? If it’s the cop or passing truck driver, coffee and donuts may be all that you need. If it’s the businessman who’s looking for something a little more classy, maybe bagels or croissants will do the trick. A cop is fine with a regular cup of java whereas that businessman might enjoy a nice flavored coffee.

A lot of what you will sell will be dictated by where you are located and who your customers are. Again, if you’re going to sell fancy coffees like Frappuccino Blended Coffee from Starbucks, it’s unlikely that you’re going to have much luck selling those to the truck stop crowd on the highway and thus keeping that in stock may just be a waste of money.

What’s in a name? Honestly…everything. Sometimes a name by itself can make all the difference in the world to your success.

Let’s look at some names throughout history.

I want you to take a good look at that last one and understand what it is representing.

Chock, means full of, loaded, lots. Okay, what is it loaded with?

Nuts?

Now technically, coffee is a bean. But can you imagine if it was called…

“Chock Full O Beans”

It doesn’t have the same ring to it, does it.

The person who came up with the name for this coffee knew what they were doing.

So your coffee shop name doesn’t necessarily have to make grammatical sense. It just has to have a ring to it and it has to appeal to the senses.

What you probably want to stay away from, though this can work too, is a generic name like…

“The Coffee House.” or “The Coffee Shop”

Now, something like, “The Coffee Cafe” has a ring to it because of the alliteration, which is a very powerful naming convention for any type of business.

If you want your shop to be identified with the surrounding area, you might want to name it something like…

“Roselle Coffee Cafe” if you’re located in a city named Roselle. This name incorporates city identification with alliteration.

Maybe you want to go with something that’s exotic or odd.

You might try…

“The Under Ground”

Ground, as in ground coffee. This is kind of a play on words. Your coffee shop, if it’s located in a subway station, could use this name nicely.

If you’re planning on setting up a coffee shop in a slum area, I doubt you’re going to get people to spend $2 for a cup of coffee. On the other hand, if you’re opening up shop in New York in the entertainment district, you can get away with $2 coffee and more. The key is knowing who your market is.

The only way to do this is to do a demographic survey of the area. You need to know who lives there, what their income level is and ultimately, what their preferences are. What about competing shops? What’s already around? Has a Starbucks been there and failed? If so, this may give you a good idea of whether or not a higher class of coffee shop will fly in that area.

Without knowing your market BEFORE you actually open your doors, you are risking failure right from the start.

Go look and see how they have their establishments setup. See what kind of menus they have. A coffee shop is more than just coffee. You have to know who your target market is and what kind of coffee they’re going to expect.
