Husband Approved Date Night Movies – Humor is Essential

Serious romance is hard work and just so, well, serious. Does it have to be? How do you and your husband relax? My guess is you need a few laughs to enjoy each other.

You and your husband have decided to rent a movie, open a bottle of wine, and farm out the kids tonight for an inexpensive date night. Before you pick out a movie, take this short test. Would your husband stay awake long enough to a) watch The Notebook, a painfully bittersweet love story or b) see the end of any Jim Carey movie.

Of course, my husband would rather watch paint dry than sit through a seriously romantic movie like The Notebook or Somersby. He’s romantic, but none of that “mushy” and “bittersweet” stuff for him. A few belly laughs mixed in with some tender lovey-dovey moments is what he’s all about.

A date night at home has to be relaxing. Otherwise, where’s the romance? If I’ve learned anything about my husband, it’s that a few laughs in a relaxed atmosphere is the best romantic remedy we can have in our busy lives. Thanks to Bill Murray, Jim Carrey, Matt Dillon, Owen Wilson, Adam Sandler, and Ben Stiller, we have wonderful, warm laughs… with kisses mixed in!

Have you seen any good, romantic comedies lately? My husband’s favorite funny movies are now some of my favorites, too! Take a look at just a few picks for our favorite date night movies.

The Princess Bride (1987): Is this a kissing book? The Princess Bride is the story of a woman who is being forced to marry a cold, evil prince, while her true love tries to stop the wedding. I don’t know how many times I tried to get my husband to watch this movie until finally I just put the movie in, clicked play, and hid the remote. It’s now one of his favorite movies. He likes it because of the comedy and the fighting. I love it because it’s just a joy to watch.

Groundhog Day (1993): This movie is not only funny, it’s a look into human potential for love and living life through the repetition of one, dreary Groundhog Day… over and over and over… until a miserably cryptic weatherman, played by Bill Murray, can get it right. Through the process, he tries to figure out how to win the love of the woman who, well, starts out really not liking him in the least. The movie is a classic and one that you’ll want to watch over and over and over and over…

Wedding Crashers (2005): Two divorce mediators have the whole “guaranteed date” thing figured out. They crash weddings to meet women. They don’t just hide out at these weddings, they jump right in, joining the family in pictures, dancing, and making up stories right along to get them in with the “chicks”. Of course, there’s love in the air so the story has a few twists and the guys have to learn a few lessons about love and life. Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn are hilariously loveable goofs.

The Wedding Singer (1998): This is a great romp through the 80’s. The settings, the songs, the clothes, and the bad wedding music, are all very nostalgic and fun. Robbie, the wedding singer, goes through some rough spots when his fiance drops him. Julia, the waitress, is going to marry a man who doesn’t deserve her. Robbie and Julia team up as good friends and, well, the right thing happens for everyone. You’ll enjoy Adam Sandler’s depiction of Robbie; right down to the hair style! And, ladies, you’ll get a tear or two when Robbie sings ‘Grow Old With You’. Relax, laugh, and cuddle. This is a winner.

Fun With Dick and Jane (2005): Life is good for Dick and Jane, until the stock collapses at the company that Dick works for, and he’s made to be the fall guy. Losing all their money, their home, and their respectability in the community, tips the couple right over the edge. Off they go on a ridiculously funny blue-collar crime spree. But, when things take an unexpected turn, they turn their crime spree into something to heal the working people and the town. Jim Carrey is funny, crazy, and sweet, all at the same time. Lots of laughs and a warm ending.

Love Actually (2003): This is really eight movies in one. Short stories that tell about love, romantic love, family love between a father and son, siblings, and friends. This is a truly touching movie, but has enough laughs and light moments to keep your husband awake and interested… and laughing. Good laughs and many gentle moments to remember. Cuddle up, grab the tissues, and be ready to learn a thing or two about the meaning of love.

Taking romance seriously can really be hard to do, especially if your husband is like so many others. They need a laugh or two to relax and start to enjoy themselves… and you! Pick out a funny romantic movie, get cozy, and enjoy your time together.
